Before I started the Van Life adventure, I would wash my hair once a week or so. I know, you don’t care but bare with me, you’ll see where I’m going with this. As I said, once a week. Sometimes, it would come up in conversations (mostly a women thing) and many would say,
“I don’t know how you do it. I have to wash mine everyday or it gets so greasy its disgusting I’ve tried to spread the washes but it just doesn’t work for me.”
I get what they are saying. I used to be like that too, but I wanted to change. Mostly because I’m lazy (it takes time) but also because it’s not good for your hair or the environment. So I changed… It didn’t happen overnight. I slowly got there. Slow enough that it was not noticeable. Slow enough that it wasn’t too uncomfortable.
Now let’s make an analogy… Van Life. Not the glamorous insta-filtered full of hashtag sunset pic of your camp spot. No… the real van life. The no shower, cramped space, small storage, occasional Walmart sleepover life. Heck, I haven’t washed my hair since we left Ottawa over three weeks ago. Lots of people are simultaneously envying our life and convinced they could never do it. You can’t even imagine the number of times I was told:
“I could never – insert what’s impossible and associated excuse here – like you guys! But it’s awesome that you’re doing it.”
And the reasons are as varied as you can imagine. Live without a bathroom, make a living as a freelancer not knowing when the next pay check comes, live in such a small space with my partner, and so on…
The truth is, YOU COULD. If you wanted to, you could. First, because you are capable of way more than you think you are. Second, because you don’t have to jump in all the way. You can work towards it. What I’m trying to get at here is – try to get a little more uncomfortable each day, try new things out, get risky, inventive. See what comes out of it. You’ll soon realize that what seemed impossible to you in the first place is right there for you to grab.
